A leap in ocean knowledge and sustainable action
EDITO-Infra: The backbone of the European Digital Twin of the Ocean
The main aim of the “EU Public Infrastructure for the European Digital Twin Ocean (EDITO-Infra)” project is to build the public infrastructure backbone for the European Digital Twin of the Ocean. This will be done by upgrading, combining, and integrating key service components of the existing EU ocean observing, monitoring and data programs, namely “Copernicus Marine Service” and the “European Marine Observation & Data Network (EMODnet)” into a single digital framework. In that context, EDITO-Infra is both the name of the project and the name of the platform that will be deployed. As such, EDITO-Infra will provide the foundation for the further development of the European Digital Twin Ocean, hosting the deployment of multiple sectoral and local digital twins, supporting the deployment of new generation of ocean models (i.e., EDITO-ModelLab) and other related initiatives, including Horizon Europe “Mission Lighthouses” projects.
The EC has mandated the main operators of Copernicus Marine (MOi) and EMODnet (VLIZ) to build, with a co-creative and fully inclusive approach, the core infrastructure (“EDITO-Infra”) of the future EU Digital Twin Ocean.
- Integrate and expand existing European assets and capabilities to develop the digital backbone for EDITO.
- Support the implementation of EU legislation and policies, including the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030” and its objectives (biodiversity, zero pollution, zero carbon), by supporting the Mission Lighthouses.
- Propose the adequate architecture for integrating EDITO-Infra with the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative.
- Contribute to the United nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
