As anticipated at the Digital Ocean Forum 2024, the EDITO-Infra project has entered into a new phase of beta testing, focusing on new integrations of applications and processes developed by key European projects on the EDITO-infra platform. This phase marks a significant step in expanding the testing of the EDITO platform to new users, including using EDITO’s data lake and other resources, running applications on the platform, and more.
This new phase of EDITO beta testing (Phase 3) will cater to on-demand requests from the EU community of ocean scientists, data managers, and marine professionals to engage with the platform, provide feedback, and contribute to its continued development. As the EDITO platform is still in a pre-operational stage with limited resources, only selected requests will be initially onboarded, with a view to address others and scale up integration support services in 2025.
Several core capabilities are being tested during this phase, including:
This beta testing phase represents a critical opportunity to refine the EDITO platform, ensuring that it meets the needs of the European ocean observation, forecasting and marine research communities. It also emphasizes the importance of community co-design and co-creation, enabling stakeholders to contribute directly to the development of the platform. By engaging with users and experts, EDITO ensures that the platform evolves in a way that is aligned with real-world needs and challenges, fostering collaboration and innovation within the marine data community.
As part of this new beta-testing phase, several innovative applications are under development that aim to demonstrate the functionality and usability of the European Digital Twin Ocean, and guide new developments. These applications are designed to provide advanced tools for ocean observation, data integration, and environmental management. Several projects are closely involved in this process, developing cloud-based solutions for data sharing and collaboration across marine and environmental research communities. This collaboration will enable more precise ocean simulations, improved forecasting capabilities, and the seamless integration of diverse datasets into a unified platform, empowering decision-makers and scientists with cutting-edge tools for ocean governance and sustainability.
In line with the onboarding of new applications from key projects, a series of workshops and collaborative events have been organized, highlighting the progress and potential of the EDITO platform. EDITO continues to actively engage with the community, as shown in the infographic below, which provides a snapshot of the growing participation, front-runner applications and collaborative efforts that are shaping the evolution of the European Digital Twin Ocean.
Highlights from the EDITO-Infra Artificial Intelligence (AI) Workshop (WP2 EDITO Model Lab)
Held on 30 September to 2 October 2024, the EDITO-ModelLab AI workshop focused on the development and deployment of Deep Differentiable Emulators (DDEs) to enhance ocean simulations. Experts discussed workflows, evaluation practices, and benchmarks for DDEs on the EDITO platform. The workshop featured hands-on demos, such as global ocean forecasts, turbidity mapping, and automated sea surface height (SSH) mapping, showcasing the integration of AI and machine learning tools in ocean modeling.
Biodiversity Data Flows: EDITO-Infra Workshop at DTO-BioFlow Second General Assembly
On 3 October 2024, during the DTO-BioFlow Second General Assembly in Seville, Spain, the integration of biodiversity data flows into EDITO was discussed in an interactive workshop with EDITO team members assisting participants in navigating the platform. The event featured hands-on demonstrations of how biodiversity data and products can be incorporated into the broader thematic framework, supporting environmental monitoring and decision-making. The high level of engagement underscored the importance of biodiversity data in ocean research and management.
EDITO at OBPS VIII 2024: Advancing Interoperability for the European Digital Twin of the Ocean
At the Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS) Workshop VIII on 16 October 2024, the Copernicus Marine Service joined forces with EMODnet Biology to present best practices for enhancing data interoperability within the European Digital Twin of the Ocean. The session, part of a wider agenda running from 14-18 October 2024, focused on the critical role of data standards and conventions in ensuring seamless integration across digital services.
As EDITO-Infra continues to grow and evolve, the tools and workflows developed through these workshops and beta testing phases will play a key role in shaping future developments. The EDITO-Infra project will see the end of its initial steps in early 2025, when a new project will launch with enhanced resources to continue shaping the future of ocean observation and simulation, with a community approach, towards an operational European Digital Twin Ocean by 2030.
