Unveiling the
Software Stack

In the era of data-driven insights, the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EDITO) project stands at the forefront of data science innovation. This ground-breaking initiative is powered by a cloud-based software stack that is the backbone of its infrastructure.

The EDITO software stack is a selected collection of software components that work cohesively to create a unified and high performance, scalable and robust infrastructure that will be used to support the development of digital ocean twins. It will feature the following elements:

The EDITO software stack is a selected collection of software components that work cohesively to create a unified and high performance, scalable and robust infrastructure that will be used to support the development of digital ocean twins. It will feature the following elements:

1. Cloud-Optimised file formats

Cloud-optimised file formats such as Zarr play a fundamental role in the EDITO project as a data mover and organizer. It facilitates fast data access and subsetting offering a framework to quickly access = big datasets (terabyte level). With Zarr’s capabilities, EDITO can seamlessly handle the vast amount of data required for its mission.

2. STAC catalogue
The Collaborative Ecosystem

Spatial Temporal Asset Catalog (STAC) will be a common index to the data products made available on the EDITO data lake. STAC  is common language to describe geospatial information, so it can more easily be worked with, indexed, and discovered. This seamless integration guarantees the smooth linkage of data and applications, whether they are internal or external to EDITO. EDITO Infra serves as the central hub for these emerging data and applications, offering a unified platform to facilitate their effective functioning and interaction.

Within EDITO Infra, a diverse array of data and applications finds a home. This vibrant ecosystem will accommodate initiatives like Marco Bolo, which enhances biodiversity monitoring; Blue-Cloud 2026, a pioneering effort for seamless ocean data access; and DTO Bio-Flow, a project set to revolutionize our understanding of marine ecosystems. EDITO Infra fosters a collaborative environment that nurtures innovation and maximizes the potential of ocean data.

As the EDITO project continues to evolve and expand, so will its software stack. It’s not just about storing data; it’s about creating a seamless digital ocean twin that supports scientific discovery, environmental stewardship, and the sustainable management of our oceans.  With EDITO’s established infrastructure and a familiar software stack ready to leverage it, the future of oceanic knowledge is readily attainable.
